Does an RFID-Blocking Wallet Block AirTag or Bluetooth Tracker Signals?

Contactless cards, AirTag, and Bluetooth tracker cards use different radio systems. Contactless cards rely on RFID or NFC communication with a nearby reader. An AirTag uses Bluetooth to reach nearby Apple devices, Ultra Wideband for compatible nearby finding, and NFC for Lost Mode contact details. PunCube Sentry Card uses Bluetooth.

Metal placement still matters. PunCube says Sentry Card Bluetooth is not blocked in the same way as RFID or NFC, but its effective signal range may shrink inside the Mech Wallet's metal chamber. Put a tracker in the position designed for it, test the complete setup, and avoid treating any wallet as a guarantee of tracking range or recovery.

Four radio functions that are easy to mix up

RFID, NFC, Bluetooth, and Ultra Wideband can all appear in one wallet conversation. Their jobs differ.

A contactless payment card or access card is read at short range by a compatible terminal. The PunCube Mech Wallet's metal chamber blocks RFID and NFC communication for enclosed cards, so a card must leave the chamber before it can tap.

Bluetooth trackers are active devices. They send Bluetooth signals that nearby compatible phones or other devices can detect. Apple says an AirTag sends a secure Bluetooth signal that nearby devices in the Find My network can relay. PunCube Sentry Card also uses Bluetooth and works with its supported iOS or Android system.

AirTag adds two more functions. A compatible nearby iPhone can use Ultra Wideband for Precision Finding. A person who finds an AirTag can tap it with an NFC-capable phone to read Lost Mode contact information when the owner has enabled it.

The useful question is therefore more specific than whether a wallet blocks signals. Ask which device is transmitting, which radio it uses, where it sits, and what material lies between it and the receiving device.

What the metal chamber does

The main PunCube chamber is designed to shield enclosed RFID and NFC cards. This is useful when the goal is to keep a payment card, access card, or electronic ID from communicating through the closed metal enclosure.

The same metal body can affect other radio signals without creating a simple all-or-nothing result. Bluetooth range depends on transmitter power, receiver sensitivity, antennas, the surrounding materials, body position, interference, and physical obstacles. A tracker may still connect from one placement while performing differently from another.

PunCube's current Bifold FAQ draws this boundary directly. It says the Mech Wallet blocks RFID and NFC. It also says Sentry Card uses Bluetooth and is not blocked in the same way, while effective signal range may be reduced when the card sits inside the metal wallet.

That statement supports a placement recommendation without setting a fixed range.

How AirTag finding works around a wallet

For broader-area finding, an AirTag relies on nearby Apple devices to detect its Bluetooth signal and securely relay an approximate location through the Find My network. Whether a location update appears depends on factors that include battery condition, device settings, nearby participating devices, and the surrounding environment.

When the owner is already near the AirTag, a compatible iPhone can use Precision Finding. The current AirTag uses second-generation Ultra Wideband for that nearby guidance. Compatibility depends on the iPhone model and software.

PunCube's AirTag Module gives the round tracker a dedicated, screw-fixed position on the wallet. Use that position and keep the round AirTag out of the card stack. The AirTag is sold separately and is not included with the module.

No wallet maker can promise that an AirTag will update from every place or that a lost wallet will always be recovered. Find My is a crowdsourced network. A location can be delayed, approximate, or unavailable when no suitable device detects the tag.

How Sentry Card placement differs

Sentry Card uses a card-shaped body and supports iOS and Android. Its shape makes it easier to place in a wallet slot, but its Bluetooth function still needs radio exposure.

The main chamber can physically store the card. PunCube warns that the effective signal distance may become shorter there. The Bifold's external quick-access slot provides a more open position outside the RFID-blocking chamber and is the preferred PunCube placement when tracker signal is a priority.

The external slot also keeps the tracker separate from the mechanical card stack. That leaves the main chamber available for payment and identity cards and avoids counting the tracker as if it were a normal thin card.

Sentry Card and AirTag also belong to different device ecosystems. Choose the tracker that matches the phone and finding service you intend to use. A card-shaped tracker is not an AirTag substitute in every technical respect, and an AirTag does not become Android-compatible because it is mounted to a wallet.

A useful test before daily carry

Pair and update the tracker before installing it. Confirm that the battery is charged or healthy, the correct account is signed in, the required permissions are enabled, and the phone can locate or play a sound from the tracker while it is outside the wallet.

Next, install the tracker in the intended wallet position. Keep the same phone, room, and test points. Check the nearby connection and sound function from several ordinary positions, including the pocket or bag in which the wallet will travel. Repeat the check with the wallet turned in different orientations.

This comparison can reveal whether one placement performs differently in your setup. It does not measure a universal range. A room test also cannot reproduce the wider Find My network, since that network depends on other participating Apple devices encountering the AirTag.

Recheck after changing the case, wallet module, card load, or tracker position. Also test after a major phone update or long storage period. A working tracker with a depleted battery is still a failed tracking setup.

What a tracker can and cannot do

A tracker can help show a last reported or approximate location, trigger a sound when nearby, or guide a compatible phone during close-range finding. The exact features depend on the tracker and phone ecosystem.

It cannot prevent theft, keep a wallet physically closed, or guarantee recovery. A person can remove the tracker. Radio conditions can interrupt detection. Location information can arrive late. Account access, phone settings, and battery status can also decide whether the system works when needed.

Treat tracking as one layer in the carry setup. Card retention, contact details, account alerts, and a repeatable place for the wallet remain separate safeguards.

Frequently asked questions

Does RFID blocking disable an AirTag

No. AirTag uses Bluetooth, Ultra Wideband, and NFC for different finding functions. Metal placement can affect radio performance, so use a dedicated mounting position and test the complete setup.

Will an AirTag work anywhere in the world

There is no guaranteed worldwide result. Wider-area updates depend on nearby participating Apple devices detecting the Bluetooth signal and relaying a location through the Find My network.

Can Sentry Card stay inside the Mech Wallet

It can be stored there. PunCube says Bluetooth is not blocked in the same way as RFID or NFC, but effective range may be reduced inside the metal chamber. The Bifold external slot gives it a more open position.

Does the Bifold external slot block a contactless card

The external slot sits outside the main RFID-blocking chamber and is intended for quick access. Test the exact credential with its normal reader before relying on through-wallet tapping.

Is AirTag included with the PunCube AirTag Module

No. The AirTag is purchased separately.
